Contemporary Dance Classes

Modern dance originated in the 20th century as a strong counterpart to strict classical ballet. Modern dance is not so much about rules or fixed patterns, barring exceptions, it is much more about expression and dancing from your feeling.

The style is based on natural movements and a natural movement process. Unlike classical ballet, you make use of the black power, instead of working against it. Within this dance style, a lot of work is done with dynamic differences, floor use, gravity, breathing, and relaxation in your movements. It is a dynamic style, which means it is also an intensive lesson in which there is jumping, swinging, twisting, and rolling.

You can also combine modern dance with other styles, personally, I like to do this in my classes so that you have a variety from where the intention lies of the movements. Some examples of these combinations are:

  • Contemporary dance:

A mix of classical, jazz, and modern. This is also sometimes called contemporary dance. In this lesson, a lot of work is done on lines, and flexibility with influences from the three dance styles above.

  • Urban contemporary:

A fusion of modern/contemporary dance techniques with an urban dynamic.

  • Contemporary jazz:

These classes are very varied due to different influences from both styles.

We work hard on techniques of both styles in the classes and here breathing, relaxation and floor use are central, but also coordination and spatial insight.

The movements are generally looser, which brings out the dynamics differences even more than in modern dance.

Dress code classes:

Hair tight, black or other dark colored socks, clothes in which you can move well and can stand relaxed in class. Preferably long pants/leggings for floorwork and knee pads if you like that. You can use dancing feet as a replacement for your socks.
