Freestyle Class

In the context of dance, freestyle means that the dancer exercises a style all of his own. It is improvising to music without any preparation of choreography.

The first emphasis in this lesson is on the actual dancing, feeling, and connecting with the music. That’s step 1.

Often a dancer immediately wants to be able to do the flashiest steps, the most complicated combos, and beat killing. This is completely understandable because nowadays all the best dancers can be found all over the internet. They are influencers on social media, win the best prizes and therefore stand out among the novice dancers.

What many novice dancers forget is that the best dancers also started somewhere, at the very beginning. They first had to ‘learn’ to dance. You can’t expect a baby to run right away, right? One must first learn to crawl, stand, and walk before one can run.

Foundation

At Talentfabriek 053 we believe in a strong foundation. Only in this way is optimal development actually possible. A good start is half the battle. In this lesson, after step 1, several basic techniques are covered in order to develop an extensive vocabulary in dance. Then the emphasis is placed on applying these techniques in a unique way.

Ultimately, the complexity will be added in the form of beat killing (if the dancer makes a movement on exactly the right beat or drop, which is often surprising and therefore so special) and playing with rhythms.

Within this lesson, attention is paid to the dancer’s own style. It is possible that a novice dancer does not yet know what his own style is. By means of practicing the different styles, exploring moving with one’s own body, feedback, personal conversations, and motivation from the coach, the dancer will eventually feel what his own style is. Dance is feeling, especially in freestyle. A nice example is great to have, but that is not always the best for the dancer.

Let's free your mind

In this lesson, dance is not only practiced on a physical level. Dancing is 80% mental and 20% physical. Just like in real life you can motivate yourself to a certain action or situation, that is also the case in dance. If a dancer thinks that something is not possible to do, then it will not work. If, on the other hand, a dancer does something as complicated as jumping somersaults, flips a switch to let fear take over, and does it because he wants to, then it will work. The dancers are trained within this lesson not to think about blockages and difficulties but in solutions and useful frameworks. Being free in what you feel and expressing it in your own most optimal way is the essence of this lesson.
